– Land of brown heath and shaggy wood, Land of the mountain and the flood –
Sir Walter Scott

Welcome to Wild Soul Walks, a haven and a retreat from the stresses of life.

I am J L Hall, a Scots writer who, after two long decades in London, returned home to Scotland. Here, in this big sky country, I can feel the wind in my hair and a sting in my cheeks. I can breathe.

I live with my partner by the sea in Edinburgh where I teach creative writing classes and coach writers. When I am not working, or writing, I am walking along the wind-battered coast beach-combing and taking photographs.

My travel writing has won an international writing prize, my essays, short stories, life writing, travel writing, and poetry have been published in anthologies including 24 Stories, Tempest, A Narrative Map, AM Heath/TLC Reads, A Wild and Precious Life, Rebel Alliance, New Voices Press 2020, and Declaration of Arbroath anthologies, and online at Booksbywomen.org, Imustbeoff.com, and The Mechanics’ Institute Review.

I am currently writing, living, and breathing my nature-writing memoir, Haven, my story of recovering from trauma, finding hope, and healing in nature. I live with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and my creative practice of writing and photography is essential to my well-being.

Fàilte. Stay awhile.
