– Land of brown heath and shaggy wood, Land of the mountain and the flood –
Sir Walter Scott

Welcome to Wild Soul Walks. Here is a haven and a retreat from the stresses of life. Where the Scottish landscape brings you nature writing and well-being. Here is a place to escape into soothing words and lush photography. A chance to slow down. To find calm.

I am J L Hall, a Scots writer who, after two long decades in London, returned home to Scotland. Here, in this big sky country, I can feel the wind in my hair and a sting in my cheeks. I can breathe. Let me share this with you.

I live with my partner by the sea in Edinburgh where I teach creative writing classes and coach writers. When I am not working, or writing, I am walking along the wind-battered coast beach-combing and taking photographs.

My travel writing has won an international writing prize, my essays, short stories, life writing, travel writing, and poetry have been published in anthologies including 24 Stories, Tempest, A Narrative Map, AM Heath/TLC Reads anthologies, plus the forthcoming A Wild and Precious Life, Rebel Alliance, New Voices Press 2020, and Declaration of Arbroath anthologies, and online at Booksbywomen.org, Imustbeoff.com, and The Mechanics’ Institute Review.

I am currently writing, living, and breathing my narrative non-fiction book on finding hope and healing in nature. I have written one (and a bit) novels, both steeped in place. Both novels have been finalists in fiction awards. For more on my writing, you can take a look at wwwjlhallwriter.com

I live with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and my creative practice of writing and photography is essential to my well-being. I absolutely believe that walking in nature, day after day, in the Scottish elements is changing my life. Wild Soul Walks is my journey.

Fàilte. Stay awhile.
